Introduction

The purpose of this document is to describe the features of the organization chart (hereafter referred to as a chart) component. Broadly speaking the user should be able to

· Create a chart

· Modify a chart

· Delete a chart

The subsequent sections of this document describe the components of a chart, along with the functionality and the features of these components.

A chart is used to represent the hierarchical structure of an organization. It consists of a number of boxes, connected by lines, which collectively describe the hierarchy within an organization.

This is the default organizational chart as it appears on the screen on loading ORBET:

Right click menus on the individual nodes bring up various options. For some nodes, like the last level nodes, features like collapse / zoom branch are not available.

Basically the right click menus are "smart" or node dependent.

The very first option of Edit brings up the following dialog box:

This dialog box lets you edit the existing field text for the selected node.

The second set of options lets the user select the justification for all the fields in the selected node as shown below.

The next set of options in the right click menu lets the user add subordinate(s), staff(s), co-worker(s) and manager.

The Insert co-worker dialog box is available for all nodes except the root node. All these sub-options except the insert manager bring up individual dialog boxes.

Here is how the insert subordinate dialog box looks. It lets the user add subordinate(s) to the currently selected node.

Here is how the insert staff dialog box looks. It lets the user add staff(s) to the currently selected node.

Here is how the insert co-worker(s) dialog box looks. It lets the user add co-worker(s) to the currently selected node. The insert coworker(s) also has the additional facility of adding the new co-worker(s) to the right or to the left of the selected node.

The next option brings up the following dialog box for branch layout as shown. The structure page is shown here. It allows the user to change the structure of the selected branch. (A branch consists of a node and at least it’s immediate children nodes.)There are four possible structures: single, staggered, left/top, right/bottom, multiple. For the multiple choice, the number of columns can be specified in the edit box provided.

The orientation page allows the user to change the orientation of the selected branch. (A branch consists of a node and at least it’s immediate children nodes.) There are four possible orientations: top to bottom, left to right, right to left, and bottom to top. These options are enabled or disabled individually according to the particular node selected

The other options are described here:

Select level – this selects all the nodes on the currently selected node level in the chart hierarchy.

Select branch - this selects the current node and all the children nodes immediate and non-immediate to the selected node.

Cut, Copy, Paste - these options are available if the user has selected any node or branch and if the user wishes to duplicate the node/branch along with the selected node(s)’s properties. This feature works similar to Drag and Drop.

Collapse branch - this let’s the user collapse a particular branch. On collapsing a branch, the selected node has a small arrow indicating a collapsed branch. This option gets checked in the right click menu if active.

Zoom branch - this let’s the user zoom into a particular branch. On zooming, the branch the selected node has a small arrow indicating a collapsed branch. This option gets checked in the right click menu if active.

The Box Fields dialog box is shown here: This box lets the user add up to 10 fields for a node. It also lets the user add, delete, move the fields up or down or rename them.

This is the Rename Box Field dialog box:

The next option brings up the Box Properties dialog box:

The preview grid is still active though, and any selection made from that, enables the two disabled buttons and also the check box. The preview grid contains 18 bitmaps of standard types of boxes. The preview image shows the selected type of box with or without a border.

The Border color button, when pressed brings up a Color dialog box as shown below:

The Border color button is disabled, when the user selects a "beveled" border.

The Fill page of the Box Properties dialog box shown above has 3 buttons for selecting Pattern, Gradient, and Picture. Only one of these can be active at any given time.

Pattern: The preview grid contains 32 bitmaps of standard types of patterns. The foreground and background colors of these can be changed using the Change Background and Foreground colors respectively. The selected pattern is displayed in the preview dialog box.

Gradient: The preview grid contains 32 bitmaps of standard types of Gradient. The foreground and background colors of these can be changed using the Change Background and Foreground colors respectively. The Selected Gradient is displayed in the preview dialog box.

Picture: The picture to be used can be selected by browsing for it. Any JPEG or GIF image can be inserted. The Selected Picture is displayed in the preview dialog box.

The picture can be displayed in any of the following formats:

The image selected is shown in the above dialog box as a preview.

Box Spacing: The user can change the spacing between the parent and child nodes / boxes and between 2 adjacent children. Reset will bring the sliders to the original settings of the node.

Connector Properties: The user has the option to select from either direct or right-angled connectors. Moreover, the connectors (whether staff or subordinate) can be enabled or disabled. Their colors, thickness and line style can also be changed. The options selected are displayed in a preview dialog box.

Line styles: the user can select any one of the above 8-line styles for the connector line styles.

Line thickness: the user can select any one of the above 8-line thickness styles for the connectors.

Font Properties: The user can change the font, font style, font size and font color to be used for displaying the text. The preview can be seen in the preview area. Only 4 styles viz. Bold, Italics, Plain and Bold Italics are available.
